Thirteen Views of Jupiter

I
Jupiter,
his miniature nose
pokes wet against my inner elbow
II
Sprinting to Grandma’s cooling body,
Dried leaves stick to the gray and brown of Jupiter
III
Controller of sky, lightning,
my memory
of her red hair and papery
hands. Jupiter’s memory knows
IV
Clouds, trucks, a convertible
Jupiter’s heart clanged
for fear of what?
V
Night-like orbs glint green
above wisps of goopy whiskers
VI
Child and parent search
for fun
Children and parents and Jupiter
is fun.
VII
A golden door lay
On her breast.
Behind which
Jupiter brushes against
Oversized sweatpants
VIII
Purple skies hover
Over Jupiter’s new home
Lying flat
in a fluffy round shell
IX
A whisper on a pale cheek
A pink kiss from Jupiter
On a disinterested nose
X
Never alone,
whether she liked it or not.
Alone is something
Jupiter’s not been
Quite a lot.
XI
Roused by a guttural cough
Jupiter’s ears jump
Triangles at attention
Onlookers
Jovial at hurumphs’ end
XII
I sang for smiles.
Abrupt changes in weather
change the melodies
about Jupiter,
Thunder and smiles abound.
XIII
Time has striked muscles
Sure and strong
Twined around

The four legs of Jupiter

  1. Chana, I absolutely adore this poem! The whimsical tone of the piece, coupled with the vividly descriptive images of Jupiter make for a really lovely read. I especially loved the way you've separated the stanzas, as it keeps the reader engaged and allows the speaker to present the audience with adorable snippets of Jupiter. I've read it multiple times, and honestly...I wouldn't change a single thing! Awesome job:)
